The Ashford book of weaving for knitters:

25 easy scarf projects using fancy yarnsand the Ashford Knitters Loom

Rowena Hart

AUD$30/ISBN 0958263159

Spinning wheel and loom manufacturer Ashford recently introduced the portable Knitters Loom—a sort of laptop for knitters that aims to capitalise on the novelty yarn revolution and re-educate a knitter or three. It's an excellent proposition, eliminating the intimidation factor of an enormous floor-standing loom and introducing an element of DIY to a craft that has in the past almost certainly required tutoring. And it makes sense—why shouldn't someone who likes to play with yarn enjoy weaving?

This companion book, with basic how-to for users of the Knitters Loom and 25 attractive scarf patterns using a wide variety of yarns, will get them started, but it offers little scope for where to go once you've done the scarf to death. Weaving for Knitters may entice newcomers, but they may find themselves asking the same question as the new knitters who picked up needles to make a scarf out of the beguiling but boring Feathers: ok, now what?

There is an answer, and ironically it lies in Ashford's 2002 publication The Ashford Book of Rigid Heddle Weaving by the same author. Here the door to the world of weaving is thrown wide open. The how-to is more thorough, background information is much deeper, and scarves are but one worthy feature in a range of patterns including cushions, towels, rugs and woven cloaks—all of them beautiful, informative, and inspiring.
