My first attempt at knitting modules was Elizabeth Zimmerman's famous Baby Surprise jacket. As I completed folding and stitching that mitred concoction I wondered if it would have been a better idea to do a course in origami! For me Modular Knits is a superb book--this author guides the knitter through the stages of modular knitting in a logical and mathematical way, with practice pieces for all the different shapes. The projects build upon the shapes and as the chapters progress the projects do too, from easy through to advanced.

I had fun knitting an upright equilateral triangle added to a different-coloured diamond, which, in this book, could lead to a scarf, a shawl, a hat, or a bag which can be felted.

I particularly liked the fact that with these patterns I could choose my yarn, checking on the tension, and come to terms with yardage rather than with weight. These patterns lend themselves to variegated yarns as well as all the odd lengths in the wool bag. Sewing up is minimal.

Well-photographed and thoroughly professional, this book is altogether a good buy.--Judith Avery
